A number of rare opportunities have arisen to join the multi-award winning Prison Radio Association charity!
We’re the charity that developed and runs National Prison Radio, the world’s first national radio station for people in prison.
In recent years we’ve been crowned Independent Production Company of the Year (Audio Production Awards) and Charity of the Year (Third Sector Awards). This year we’ve been nominated in an amazing fivecategories at the radio industry’s prestigious ARIAS. We’ve also been nominated for a string of British Podcast Awards.
We operate out of two prison bases, HMP Brixton and HMP Styal.
According to our latest data, 74% of people in prison listen to National Prison Radio, and they listen for an average 10.6 hours per week.
We’re obsessed with high-quality production, and we aim to inspire our audience to take positive action as a result of listening to our programmes. We therefore focus on ensuring our content is as engaging and tightly-produced as possible.
We’re looking for two full-time Producers and an Audiences Coordinator.
One Producer will work at our ground-breaking radio production project in HMP Styal, a women’s prison near Manchester.
Job Description
Working alongside women serving custodial sentences in Styal, you’ll be part of a small, high-performing staff team – making life-changing programmes for broadcast into prison cells across the country on National Prison Radio.
A key programme produced at HMP Styal is our Family and Friends Request Show. Available inside and outside, this important programme supports incarcerated people, their families and wider networks who care for people behind bars. Working on this show will give a motivated producer the opportunity to develop and implement a communications plan which will act as an innovative point of connection for all those impacted by the criminal justice system.
Occasional travel to HMP Brixton, and other prisons across the estate, may be required.
The second Producer will work at our flagship radio production project in HMP Brixton, a men’s training prison in London.
Job Description
You’ll join a hugely experienced team in HMP Brixton, which is a busy, lively environment unlike any other. Like our Styal colleagues, you’ll be making regular programmes to help listeners behind bars understand the prison system and make the most of their time inside.
You’ll work on a wide range of programmes, both speech- and music-based, which must draw in listeners and keep them listening.
These are hugely rewarding roles, not only making programmes that our listeners value, but also helping people in prison to discover new skills and talents, and to hone them in a professional radio production environment.
We’re looking for experienced producers with a proven track record in producing high-quality radio.
Our Audiences Coordinator is home-based, but will be expected to visit prisons across the country on a regular basis with colleagues.
Job Description
We have a really close relationship with our audience. This is central to our success. You will nurture those relationships, get to know what makes our listeners tick, keep in touch with audience feedback and advise colleagues on what works and what doesn’t. Your role is to ensure the charity is fully in touch with our people.
Ours is an organisation unlike any other, and we’re particularly interested in hearing from candidates from under-represented backgrounds and from people who have lived experience of the criminal justice system.
Candidates interested in the Brixton and Styal production roles have to demonstrate a solid background in radio / audio production in a professional environment.
If you apply for the Audiences Coordinator role, it is essential that you can demonstrate your ability to work accurately and at speed. You also need excellent communication skills and the ability to spot trends early.
We’re a driven, tight-knit team working in what can be a challenging, exhilarating world, and you will be motivated by the knowledge that your work has the potential to make a real difference.
