Prison Radio International goes Latin American!

In October 2023, the PRA visited Latin America to help grow prison radio’s global impact.

Prison Radio International (PRI) is spearheaded by Phil Maguire OBE, the Chief Executive of the Prison Radio Association.

It supports the development of radio projects around the world that work with people who are, or have been, in prison.

Supporting the development of prison radio overseas is one of the Prison Radio Association’s strategic priorities.

Two years ago, PRI began a trial to build regional networks as a way of strengthening the global prison radio community. Latin America was picked for this pilot.

After an inspirational visit in May 2022, PRI saw the potential to strengthen existing initiatives and to support new projects through building this regional network.

This year, PRI helped to organise the first ever Latin American Prison Radio Conference.

Phil, together with PRI consultant Dr. Ruth Armstrong, visited Uruguay and Argentina.

You can read Ruth’s account of what happened during that visit below.

The deprivation from which their initiative grows was more than obvious, but the strength of the human spirit in the most challenging of conditions was awe inspiring.
Dr Ruth Armstrong

Collaboration, even where it is judiciously safeguarded and fraught with compromise, is always at the heart of progression.
Dr Ruth Armstrong

The Prison Radio Association is leading the development of Prison Radio International (PRI), a growing global movement of people using audio in criminal justice settings for social good.
