National Prison Radio host Ali interviews chair of 2023 Booker Prize judges: Esi Edugyan

Books Unlocked has broadcast every evening on National Prison Radio for over a decade. It’s a partnership with the National Literacy Trust.

The programme features Booker Prize nominated titles and is funded by the Booker Prize Foundation.

Listeners can write in to request a free copy of the featured book. Readers are then encouraged to follow the text along with the show.

National Prison Radio recently welcomed the international bestselling author Esi Edugyan, whose book Washington Black was on the shortlist in 2018.

Ali, who first worked with National Prison Radio inside HMP Brixton in 2019, now produces and presents the daily breakfast show, Porridge.

This year, Esi is the chair of the 2023 judging panel for The Booker Prize. The shortlist of six books was announced in September 2023 and the winner’s ceremony takes place on Sunday 26 November in London.
