Louis Theroux: Inside the Manosphere

Everyone’s talking about our patron Louis Theroux and the manosphere. For us at the Prison Radio Association, the issues he explores are part of daily life behind bars.

96% of people in prison across England and Wales are men. In a largely male environment, cut off from the outside, extreme ideas about being a ‘real man’ like those Louis explores in his documentary can take hold.

Ideas about always being tough, putting other men down, or seeing women as less important can become the norm. These attitudes can affect how men treat each other, how they think about themselves, how they look after their mental health, and how they interact with the world on release.

That’s why National Prison Radio is so important.

By broadcasting the voices and experiences of women and giving men a space to talk about feelings, masculinity, and wellbeing, we help prisoners challenge harmful ideas and reflect on their own lives. 83% of our listeners in male prisons say they talk about things they’ve heard on NPR with others, and 76% say NPR has helped them understand other people better.

Together, we can keep raising awareness and creating space for healthier conversations about masculinity – inside prisons and beyond.

Thank you to our mate and patron Louis for shining a light on these issues outside prison walls, and thank you to the men inside who are doing it from within.
