And Breathe is back

An article written for Inside Time April edition – the national newspaper for people in prison – announcing the brand new series of National Prison Radio favourite, And Breathe.

Life in prison can often feel noisy, busy and stressful. It can be hard to switch off, relax or get a good night’s sleep. That’s where And Breathe comes in.

And Breathe is a show on National Prison Radio all about mindfulness and meditation. The aim is simple: to help people relax, clear their minds and feel a bit more in control of their day.

The show is presented by NPR producer Sam, who brings a specially chosen chill-out playlist, and meditation expert Emily. Emily works in prisons, so she understands how difficult it can be to find peace in a loud and chaotic environment. She guides listeners through simple meditation exercises designed especially for people inside.

Each show explores the mental and physical benefits of mindfulness and meditation. Listeners learn easy techniques that can help calm minds, deal with stress and improve sleep. The show starts with the basics and gradually introduces more advanced ideas, along with guided meditation sessions to follow along with.

Of those in prison who have heard And Breathe, 86% have tried the meditation and 90% of these found it helpful or enjoyable.

Through programmes like And Breathe, we aim to help people in prison handle difficult situations better, manage their emotions and find moments of real calm.

The new series of And Breathe starts on Tuesday 24th March and is available every Tuesday at 5pm and 10pm on National Prison Radio – available on in-cell television and laptops across England and Wales.
