B at the Beeb

From HMP Styal to BBC 5Live – the very talented B was invited in for a day shadowing the 5Live team at MediaCityUK in Salford.

During her sentence at HMP Styal, B joined our National Prison Radio team and worked with us for nearly six months. She produced a range of shows, and even subbed in for Ali to present Porridge – one of our most listened to programmes on the entire schedule.

Since her release from prison, B has continued to work with us and was recently invited to spend the day with the BBC 5Live team in Salford. Bridie was shown round by Lynsey, a Studio Director, and Izzy, a Broadcast Journalist and Producer – both of whom visited Styal earlier this year to deliver a workshop.

Bridie started her day with Lynsey who showed her the 5Live studios where she got to watch presenters work their magic from the gallery and was later able to sit in the hot seat herself and learn how the studio works. In the afternoon Bridie got to shadow work across news and breakfast radio with Izzy.

Providing and supporting opportunities like these for talented prison leavers like B not only helps her build networks and connections that can lead to meaningful paid work in the audio sector, but also enables our industry partners to recognise and experience just how talented prison leavers are.

We look forward to continuing our work with B and sharing updates on what she goes on to achieve. Thank you to BBC 5Live for believing in our work and for creating these opportunities. It’s a total pleasure to work with you.
