Eddie Kadi visits National Prison Radio

The award-winning comedian and presenter Eddie Kadi visited our National Prison Radio studio behind the walls of HMP Brixton to give his take on the importance of laughter and to talk about why it’s important to look after yourself.

Eddie had just arrived back in London after hosting the 2025 MOBO awards in Newcastle. He jumped straight into the studio to be interviewed for our show NPR Talk; the home of conversation on National Prison Radio. He spoke with National Prison Radio’s Lady Unchained and Ali, giving us all the gossip from the night.

When asked about his highlights, he talked about Bashy winning the album of the year award.

“I’ve seen that brother working… the emotional speech, talking about being a postman and a bus driver and he never gave up and he gave advice to all those people out there, whatever situation you are in, your dreams are valid. He’s proof of that.”

As BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Official UK Afrobeats Chart Show presenter, it was only right that Eddie also recorded some audio for National Prison Radio’s own Afrobeats show: Motherland. Eddie’s special episode will be broadcast to listeners in prison cells nationally on Tuesday 22nd April 2025 at 9pm.

But it’s wasn’t just showbiz chat, Eddie also talked to National Prison Radio about his experience of arriving in the UK as a 9-year-old, unable to speak English.

He described how he coped with being in an unfamiliar country and how throughout his life, he has found himself inadvertently teaching others about African culture.

“When I’m able to teach people about my culture through laughter – it’s humbling.”

When asked about how it makes him feel to know he has made people laugh, Eddie replied:

“It’s a gift and a responsibility. I’ve always just been myself, it’s therapeutic to express myself.”

Word about the celebrity visitor had got round the wings in HMP Brixton and some residents recorded some special messages:

“Big up Eddie Kadi, love for coming in to HMP Brixton. Love all the time.”

Eddie responded:

“That’s the thing about making your brothers happy. It’s a special thing. Often the stereotype is that we make each other angry, we’re constantly enemies! But actually, the power is in making each other happy and we do that more often than people think. And if we do that even more, the results will be very different.”

And the best thing you can do for yourself, according to Eddie Kadi?

Being able to be who you are is the best thing you can do for yourself.”
