Baroness Floella Benjamin, OM DBE DL Announced as Patron of the Prison Radio Association

As Black History Month draws to a close, we are thrilled to announce that the inspiring Baroness Floella Benjamin has become a Patron of the Prison Radio Association (PRA). Her unwavering commitment to empowering disadvantaged communities and advocating for social justice makes her a perfect fit for our organisation, and we are honoured to have her join our mission to transform lives through the power of radio.

Baroness Benjamin, celebrated for her career as a children’s television presenter, actor, author, and lifelong advocate for equality, has visited the headquarters of National Prison Radio (NPR), based within the walls of HMP Brixton. During her visit, she gave an inspiring and heartfelt interview, sharing stories from her childhood, her journey to the House of Lords, and the importance of hope, resilience, and representation for all.

Speaking with the NPR team, Baroness Benjamin captivated the audience with her warmth, wisdom, and passion for change. She spoke directly to incarcerated listeners, urging them to believe in their ability to transform their lives despite the challenges they face. Reflecting on her own experiences of overcoming adversity, she said:

No matter where you come from, no matter what your past is, you have the power to rise above it and make a difference in the world. You are the masters of your own destiny, it’s not how you start but where you finish that matters. So keep smiling cos winners SMILE!

The interview was a resounding success, leaving a lasting impression on both the NPR team and the many listeners who tuned in. Baroness Benjamin’s words resonated deeply with the prison population, offering them hope and encouragement at a time when it’s needed most. As a Patron, Baroness Benjamin’s voice will continue to inspire and uplift, helping to break the cycle of reoffending by connecting with people through positive, transformative radio programming.

Reflecting on her new role as Patron of the PRA, Baroness Benjamin said:

“I am delighted to support the Prison Radio Association and its vital work in giving people in prison a voice. Everyone deserves a second chance, and NPR is a lifeline for so many, providing education, hope, and connection. I look forward to working alongside the team to continue making a difference to people’s lives.”

As an organisation, the PRA is dedicated to reducing reoffending by using the power of radio to connect prisoners to education, community, and a sense of belonging. National Prison Radio reaches over 80,000 people across the UK’s prison estate every day, offering a unique and trusted platform for prisoners to engage with a wide range of content – from personal stories and interviews to educational programs and rehabilitation support.

Phil Maguire OBE, CEO of the PRA, welcomed Baroness Benjamin’s appointment, saying:

We are incredibly fortunate to have Baroness Floella Benjamin as our Patron. Her passion for equality, education, and social justice aligns perfectly with the work we do at the PRA. Her visit to our studio in HMP Brixton was a highlight for everyone involved, and we are excited to see how her influence will shape the future of National Prison Radio.

As we celebrate the achievements of Black History Month, Baroness Benjamin’s appointment reminds us of the power of role models and the importance of using our voices to create positive change. Her support of the PRA will undoubtedly strengthen our work, helping us to continue transforming lives through radio and offering hope to those who need it most.
